As the eldest son of a rich family, Chouno was supposed to be the heir of his family's fortune, but when he fell incurably ill, his younger brother was appointed heir and Chouno became quite unneeded, unwanted, and despised.

He turned to alchemic research in order to find a cure for his disease, and got involved in the study and production of the homunculi. His goal is to become a homunculus himself, and thereby become immortal and escape his certain death through illness. It's no surprise that Chouno, who was coldly rejected by his family, would end up sacrificing other people for his personal benefit.

He quickly becomes Kazuki's archenemy, but their relationship is not purely antagonistic: After his transformation, Chouno wants to be called "Papillon", and the only person still allowed to call him by his real name is Kazuki, since he was, all things considered, the one person who acknowledged Chouno's existence and showed some concern for him.

Even though they are enemies, Chouno remains oddly devoted to Kazuki.

This character is easily one of the most important ones, and can be considered one of the three central characters of BR, along with Kazuki and Tokiko. Without a doubt, it is his flamboyant and startling appearance that define Busou Renkin's nature.

Papillon is usually wearing an unusual outfit in black and violet, and a butterfly mask. Sometimes only the butterfly mask. Yes.
