Chapter 2: Dead Body and Revenger 2
First release: December 4 2007, in Jump SQ 01/08 Length: 31 pages Colour pages: none
Fury bursts into Dr. Peaberry's house, and they start arguing before Fury can actually say what he wants. Wraith enters after Fury, and thanks Dr. Peaberry for saving his friend. Fury asks her to examine Wraith, since she is the expert on Frankensteins, and after the examination, Dr. Peaberry can determine that not only is Wraith a Frankenstein, he was also created by the same man who built the monster that the friends battled earlier.
Fury asks her to change Wraith back into a human, but Dr. Peaberry replies that this cannot be done. The only option would be to destroy him, because a Frankenstein is not created from a living being, but from a dead one. Fury is still desperate about saving his friend, but Wraith assures him that he does not care much; on the contrary, he enjoys his new, immortal body. To demonstrate, he stabs himself in the chest with a knife, happy that the wound will just heal itself. When he sees the pained expression on Fury's face, he sobers up.
Now, Fury asks Wraith to tell him the identity of the creator, but Wraith only replies that Fury would only use this information to take revenge on the creator, and it is Wraith's belief that Fury should not focus so much on revenge, but move on and find something to do with his life after his revenge is accomplished.
While the friends argue about when Fury's desire for revenge is ever going to be sated, Dr. Peaberry notices that visitors are coming to the house.
It is Edel and her bodyguard, Shade Jason. The three decide to keep the truth about the Frankensteins from them for the time being.
Edel greets Fury and Wraith enthusiastically, explaining that she had been looking for them. When she notices Dr. Peaberry, she is confused for a moment, thinking she is Fury's girlfriend, and reacts quite emotionally, only more so when Fury tells her that Dr. Peaberry was the one who saved his life.
Finally, Dr. Peaberry tells everyone but Fury to leave, so she can continue treating his wound. Before leaving, Wraith reminds Fury once more that he needs to make a decision about his future plans.
When they are alone, Dr. Peaberry remarks that among all the Frankensteins that she has seen up until now, Wraith is by far the most human-like. She also talks about Edel, saying it is obvious that she is not Lord Weiss' real daughter, and she deduces from Edel's behaviour towards the boys that she is also a survivor of the incident five years ago.
Fury explains that Edel lost her memory the day of the attack, and does not remember anything at all from her past, including her name. Lord Weiss adopted her, thus allowing her the chance of a good life. He asks Dr. Peaberry not to tell Edel about the Frankensteins.
"Ignorance is bliss, huh?" Dr. Peaberry tells Fury that there is a saying among those who meddle with Frankenstein research: To get involved with the Frankensteins of your own accord, you have to be either evil, or insane.
She advices Fury that if he wants to keep going, he should figure out what to do about Wraith first, explaining that a Frankenstein will never be exactly like the person it was built from: memory loss or personality change can occur, and the person' psyche will never be kept intact. In the end, she warns him, a Frankenstein only knows one thing: how to destroy.
Meanwhile, Wraith, Edel and Shade are on their way home. Edel is expressing worry for Fury, and Shade comments on the close friendship she seems to have with the two boys. Edel explains that it is because they share the same fate, and will always be together. Wraith interrupts her, pointing out that unlike Fury and himself, she is Lord Weiss' adoptive daughter, so she does not really belong to them. Edel wants to dismiss Wraith's words as a joke, but he tells her that he was being serious. Edel is hurt and confused, but says nothing more.
She has a flashback to one night five ears ago when the children had already started to live at the Weiss Mansion. When she could not sleep, Edel went outside, and found Fury and Wraith talking. Wraith asked Fury whether he could not sleep because the lightning and snow reminded him of that night. When Edel joins them, she tells them that she cannot sleep at nights like this, because she feels scared although she does not know why. She asks Fury if he is also scared, and when he replies a bit evasively, she hugs him, asking him if that makes him feel less frightened. She says that remembering her earliest memories usually calms her down. Her first memories are of being carried through the snowstorm by Fury.
When Fury wakes up from the narcosis after his treatment, he has made up his mind, and asks Dr. Peaberry to tell him the place where the Frankenstein research originated. She tells him it's... London.
(Drinking game challenge: Take a drink whenever someone mentions "London" or "going to London".)
Back at the mansion, Fury tells Wraith that this is what he wants to go after accomplishing his revenge: go to London with him so he can take care of the rest of the Frankensteins. But before this, Fury needs to finish his business here. He asks Wraith once more to tell him the identity of his creator.
